Connecting Kenwood TS-590s to the internet on an iMac?

Post by AH6GT »

I have a new (for me) Kenwood TS-590s and am running fldigi just fine using the usb cable. I have downloaded VirtualBox and a copy of Windows 10. I have it running just fine. I have rxtx+ loaded onto my Samsung S5. So far, so good.

Now I am wondering if there are any other hams out there who are already controlling their 590 with their android. I am running into difficulties with a few steps.

A: Can the Kenwood connect to the internet using a Mac - without the VirtualBox? I would love to know how.

B: If the Windows is essential, I need to know what the path is to my virtual com port. I have no clue!

Aloha in advance!

Hi Konabob,

You don't need Windows for your setup and Mac, even not yet tested, is supported.
You need to run on your Mac computer jAReC Java application, available for free download on my web site.
More details in both Pocket RxTx and jAReC applications user guides:
http://www.yo3ggx.ro/pocketrxtx/doc081/ ... v0.8.1.pdf
http://www.yo3ggx.ro/jAReC/doc08/jAReC_v0.8.pdf

You will be able to select COM port from jAReC GUI.Please be aware that you need to open two TCP ports in firewall, one for CAT (the one set in jAReC/Pocket RxTx) and the next one (+1) for audio. For example if you set port 4321 for CAT, you need to open 4322 too, for audio.

Hope this helps.
If you have further questions just post here.

Thank you.

Thank you! I will get to work on this, and let you know how things are working for me. This is a very exciting new addition to Ham Radio!
I would like to use this thread to document what I am doing, as I am sure there are other TS-590s owners who use Macintosh Computers.

I have installed RxTx on my Samsung Galaxy S5 from the Play Store.
I have installed Java 8 (Update 66) from http://www.java.com/en/download/mac_download.jsp

I have jarecmini_v0 folder downloaded and sitting on my desktop. Not sure where the folder or files should be stored on my mac.
Once I have them in the correct location on my mac, should I follow the Linux directions on http://www.yo3ggx.ro/jAReC/doc08/jAReC_v0.8.pdf?

Ok! I now have jAReC v0.8.1 running on my iMac. The Serial port menu is blank. There are no choices. How do I get a com port or serial port to appear in this menu?

My msn.cfg file is the default which includes:
sBaudrate=38400
bAutostart=true
iPlayInterface=4
sCOMport=COM6 <-------- Do I need to update this line?
bUseAudio=true
iRecInterface=4

Using Terminal Program, I see this information:
KonabobDesktop:~ konabob$ ls /dev/cu.*
/dev/cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART
KonabobDesktop:~ konabob$ screen /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART 38400
[screen is terminating]

I am able to run fldigi and WSJT-X using this driver.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I have no experience with Mac computers, nor one to play with it. jAReC just displays the serial interfaces reported by the Java subsystem.
Do you have any other Java application that can see the Bluetooth virtual serial port?

I was able to test jAReC on Windows and Linux systems, as this is all I have here.
Maybe other Mac users following this list can answer.

Ok, Dan. Here is a brief rundown of what I have done so far:

I installed Java Runtime from: https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_mac.xml

I created a folder called 'Java' in my (user) Library folder, and put all the jAReC files in it.
~/Library/Java/jsn.cfg (this is the config file)

I have used the Mac terminal and the ' ls -l /dev' command.
I get a list of about 50 ports. Here are a few examples:

crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 1 Dec 5 05:55 cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 0 Dec 5 05:55 tty.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 3 Dec 5 06:28 cu.SLAB_USBtoUART
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 18, 2 Dec 5 06:28 tty.SLAB_USBtoUART
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 4, 64 Dec 5 05:54 ttyt0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 4, 65 Dec 5 05:54 ttyt1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 4, 66 Dec 5 05:54 ttyt2
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 4, 67 Dec 5 05:54 ttyt3
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 4, 68 Dec 5 05:54 ttyt4
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 4, 69 Dec 5 05:54 ttyt5
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 5, 80 Dec 5 05:54 ptyu0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 5, 81 Dec 5 05:54 ptyu1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 5, 82 Dec 5 05:54 ptyu2
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 5, 83 Dec 5 05:54 ptyu3
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 5, 84 Dec 5 05:54 ptyu4
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 5, 85 Dec 5 05:54 ptyu5

USBtoUART is the Silicon Labs driver that fldigi uses to talk to my Kenwood.

I have edited my jsn.cfg file as seen here:
#Sat Dec 05 06:44:48 HST 2015
bUseAuthentication=true
bUseEncryption=false
sBaudrate=57600
bAutostart=true
iPlayInterface=4
sCOMport=/dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART
bUseAudio=true
iRecInterface=4
sHSecret=(not shown, for security reasons, obviously)
nwPort=4443

When I run jAReC.jar, the yellow window is displayed, showing:
MyIP: 10.0.1.15
Serial port: (No options are displayed)
Baud Rate:57600
TCP Port: 4443
Autostart: checked
Mic: (No options are displayed)
Start Button: grey - inactive
Stop Button is functional

This is as far as I have gotten. I am wondering if my path is incorrect.
Best of luck to all of you Mac users. This looks like a very promising program, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi,

If the serial interface is not displayed in the application GUI list then you cannot configure it manually in the config file.
Let's see if someone else reading this will be able to help.

Thanks Dan. If you have any more ideas, please let us know!
Are there any drivers that jAReC are known to work with?

Silicon Labs Driver is available here: https://www.silabs.com/Support%20Docume ... Driver.zip

Hi,
jAReC just enumerate in the GUI the available serial ports seen by the Java subsystem. I don;t think is driver dependant...
I will try to find a Mac to test it.

Thank you.

I turned on Java Logging, and ran jAReC.jar. Here is the Java Log. Do I need JFX? I am having trouble finding a download for Mac.
I downloaded Java SE Runtime Environment from: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... 33155.html
